~~ WHAT WE DO ~~

 Working for a healthier society, the relief of poverty and the advancement of the Public education                                  

                      Save the Diabetic Life(SDL),is a charity working in the United Kingdom as well as in Africa (Democratic Republic of Congo). The charity was set up in 1989, initially it was set up for people with diabetes, but due to the large demand for service from other categories of health problem, and also according to our survey the service is now expended and helping all the African French speaking community in the UK with health problems. In the Africa (Democratic Republic of Congo), our work is  still concentrated on diabetes.

Our main objects are:

1.The relief of persons in need, particularly French speaking African and the African community in general including their dependents who are in need by reasons of poverty, sickness and distress, and currently living in the UK or in the Democratic Republic of Congo. We are assisting all of them in the provision of counselling, information, health education, advice and support.

2. The advancement of the public education in particular the education of French speaking African and other French speaking people and their dependents.

3. The welfare of the public, in particular for the benefit of those members of the public who may be African French speaking or of the African French speaking origin through providing or assisting in the provision of facilities for recreation and other leisure time occupation in the interests of welfare and with the object of improving the conditions of life of the members of the public for whom the facilities are available to use.

-We counsel and advise on general health.
-We provide specialised advise on diabetes and

-We provide health education to raise awareness on diabetes and related diseases. For more information on raising awareness of diabetes, please click here
-We offer counselling and advice on training and
 employment.
-We counsel and advise on housing and homelessness.
-We provide interpreters and translators in French,
 English, Swahili and Lingala.
-We advise and counsel on welfare rights.
-We provide referrals on immigration matters and
 appeals.
-We provide psychological support to newly diagnosed
 diabetics.
-We escort clients to tribunals and to Home Office for
 interpreting.
-We escort our clients to GP's, hospitals, DSS,
 Housing, social services and so on.
-We run English classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
-We run homework classes on Saturdays and home
 visit week days to help children.

For the time being, the charity is 95% run by volunteers. We have one paid part-time staff, twelve regular volunteers and six committee members. In Africa we are working in the Democratic Republic of Congo in partnership with General Hospital Of Kinshasa and the Mukengeli Medical Centre. We provide to them specialist advice, information, counselling and material support in kind of drugs, equipments, food, clothing, hospitalisation fees and so on...
