~~ HISTORY ~~

Working for a healthier society, the relief of poverty and the advancement of the Public education

Mrs Mathilde E. Loseke (The Chairperson) who is currently working at the North Middlesex Hospital as a staff Nurse had the idea years ago while working in the diabetic clinic of the Central Hospital of Kinshasa (Mama Yemo Hospital) in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The majority of their patients at that time were teenagers. The strange thing was the fact that the level of mortality was higher among these teenagers than among other categories of patients. She can remember that, while caring for a group of 30 teenagers with diabetes, ten of them died within one particular year due to diabetes related complications and two others had their legs amputated.

According to survey, teenagers were given less attention by parents who estimated that teenagers could support themselves. In the DRC, there are no national health services and people have to support themselves in all aspect of health. Diabetes being a long-life disease is costly and not everyone is able to support themselves. People are very poor and unable to support their families. Children are most time abandoned by their parents. They will therefore go to join others in the streets where the lifestyle is opposite to the diabetic lifestyle which requires more discipline and self control. They loose control of the disease and become victim of all sort of complications with all the consequences that can occur. Touched by the tragedy, Mrs Loseke decided to look for ways that could bring changes. She started to help with her own salaries until the time she came in United Kingdom. In UK, Mrs Loseke realised that refugees and asylum seekers are facing similar problems. She shared her idea with some friends and, together, decided to create Save the Diabetic Life (SDL).

"I am devoted to participate actively for the relief of suffering and poverty caused by this devastating disease" said once Mrs Loseke . This is not other people's problem, it is our problem and we must do something about it"
